15th May 2003, 18:30 → 21:00 BST

starting between exits 3 and 4 on old st roundabout at 6.30pm BST, ending at Limehouse Town Hall at 9.00pm BST.

this is a london adaptation of the original node runner game, as played in NYC. the rules of the original node runner game are instructive, but not accurate for our purposes.

THE RULES

  • there are four people per team (but you can get away with three).
  • each team requires the following equipment:
    • a laptop running wireless network detection software, such as netstumbler or kismet. you will need to provide logs at the end of the game.
    • a GPS unit, for which you will need to provide a waypoint log. this need not be immediately after the game if there are networking issues with your GPS.
    • a digital camera connected to the above laptop, via which pictures can be uploaded during the game.
    • optionally a DV camera with which to document your adventures.
  • the aim is to detect, photograph and log on to as many open wireless nodes as possible in the course of 2 1/2 hours, on a journey from the hackney/shoreditch/city borders to limehouse.
  • a point will be awarded for every node successfully scanned in the logs, whether open and accessible or not.
  • five points will be awarded for every node successfully logged into and pictures uploaded (to the interface here) from.
  • four points will be deducted if you arrive at limehouse town hall later than 9pm (and we may leave for the pub without you).
  • two pictures per node are required: one showing a team member within node range; another identifying a distinguishing sign or landmark visible from it.
  • personal cars are probably not permitted; the NYC node runner game supplied taxi fare, but we will not; be it on your own cost-benefit analysis.

THE CONTEXT

node runner london is an aspect of the collaborative mapping week at the Cartographic Congress.

we are deeply grateful to yury gitman and the rest of the original node runners for putting up with this.

there is a node runner wiki page on which you can jot down your entries and requests.
