Of all the genres of writing, by far the one that fascinates me the most is science fiction. As a result of this interest, over the years I've built up a collection of sf novels, short story collections and even a few 1950s pulp magazines, when I've been lucky enough to find them. I realised recently that I had no list of what I have, and so I've put together the whacking great list on this page. Where possible, I've included a link to the
author's home page, or the most interesting page about the author. If there doesn't seem to be an obvious candidate for that, why not have a look for
the author's summary at The SF Site. There are also some other links pertaining to specific books.
Feel free to drop me a line if there's anything that interests you on this page, or if I've made a mistake somewhere.

I'm gradually applying star ratings for my opinions of the books - from half a star to four stars (or five for Outstanding), although this being my collection rather than a general review list, you won't find anything here that I consider to be crap. Eventually, they'll all be rated, and reviews will follow, too. Please don't hold your breath, though. A single rating isn't really good enough; I should rate the books on various different criteria. However, that would be a gigantic undertaking, so a single rating will have to suffice.

* The Lost Worlds of 2001 isn't actually science fiction, but a book about the making of Kubrick's movie of Clarke's novel. So I thought it merited inclusion.
** Some time around 1996 I spotted two old-looking H.G. Wells books at a church jumble sale being offered at £1 each. Being fond firstly of H. G. Wells' work, secondly of old books, and thirdly of bargains, I decided to buy them. But then I looked inside them, and noticed that one (The Island of Doctor Moreau) was dated 1897, and the other (The First Men in the Moon) was dated 1901. Surely they couldn't be first editions? At that point I had no option - I had to buy them in case it was true. I had no way of checking their status after the purchase, though.
They sat on my shelf as part of my collection until the shortly before the end of 2002, when I happened across a book called the Guide to First Edition Prices. I immediately looked up the two volumes, and lo and behold, they were indeed both first editions, worth in the region of £750 each. Needless to say, I was surprised. I guess somebody must have died and his or her books were given away to the church to sell, although I didn't see any others that looked like firsts. So, unlucky them and lucky me. These two volumes are now the two most treasured items in my collection. I don't care about how much they're worth - they're just beautiful things and I love them dearly. And before you ask, no, they're not for sale.
